SEO tools for website managers — without the $150-a-month suite.
If you manage a few websites, you don't need a per-seat SEO suite — you need three things: your own search data, rank tracking, and occasional competitor data. All three can run on your own infrastructure, with your own API key and a pay-per-use data bill, for a few US dollars a month instead of over a hundred per seat. And the data — your history — stays with you.
If you manage websites for a living — in-house at a small business, or as a solo consultant with a handful of clients in the US, UK, or EU — you know the suite dilemma. You open the pricing page, it's around $100–150 a month per seat, and what you actually need is maybe 10% of what it does. You need to know where your keywords rank and whether they're moving. That's it. This is how to get exactly that, and own it.
You're paying per-seat for data that's mostly yours
The awkward secret of the big SEO tools is that their most-used report — where your pages rank — is built substantially on data about your sites that you can get yourself. Your own search performance is already in Google Search Console, free. Keyword positions can be tracked with open-source software. The suites' real value is the huge proprietary competitor databases, which most website managers open twice a year.
Per-seat pricing makes sense for an agency with forty analysts. For a person managing five sites, it's rent on your own numbers. And when the subscription lapses, the historical record — the graph you'd want to show a client to prove the work — is trapped behind the paywall you just cancelled.
Ask: "If I cancel this next month, do I still have the last two years of rankings for my sites?" If the answer is no, you're renting your own history. The own-it stack exists so the answer is yes.
The three pieces, on your own infrastructure
The own-it stack is genuinely just three pieces, and none of them is exotic:
- Your own search data, kept by you. Search Console only keeps a limited window of history in its interface. Pull it into your own storage and you keep the whole record — every query, every position, forever. This alone is the thing you can't buy back later.
- Open-source rank tracking. A free, open-source tracker deployed on your own box, watching the keywords you actually care about on the schedule you set. It's the core job of the suite, done without the seat fee.
- Pay-per-use data, with your own key. When you do need bulk competitor or keyword-volume numbers, you call a metered data API — your account, your key — and pay for the calls you made. A website manager's real usage is usually a few US dollars, not a monthly plan.
What it costs, honestly
The running cost: a small VPS (a few US dollars a month, paid to the provider) to run the tracker and store the data, plus a metered data bill in single digits. Versus $100–150 per seat per month for a suite — before the second seat. At website-manager usage it isn't close.
The real cost is the one-off: assembling it, wiring the Search Console pull and the tracker and the report that lands in your inbox or Slack on a Monday. That's the work, priced once. After that the stack just runs, and — this is the point — the record it's building is yours.
When the suite is genuinely worth it
Don't let anyone talk you out of a suite if you need one. If you're running backlink-gap analysis across hundreds of competitor domains weekly, or you have analysts who live in the thing all day, the assembly cost of doing that yourself is real and the suite is worth its price. The argument here is narrow: for the website manager with a handful of sites, the suite is mostly a rental of your own data.
If that's you, own the stack.
